Build powerful connections by sharing the “Why” behind your business

If you’ve been in my world for a little while, you’ve probably heard me share my story about struggling with finding the support I needed after my son was born, spending hours frantically googling in the middle of the night.

When I created my business, I decided there was no one I’d rather support than the heartfelt small businesses I’d been so eager to find when I was struggling with my son, and help them show up easily and confidently online so other families can benefit from their amazing resources.

While it is a lovely origin story for my business, it’s actually more than that. This is also the “why” behind my business.

Build powerful connections by sharing the “Why” behind your business

What is your “why”?

The “Why” behind your business isn’t just a nice story that you tell friends when they ask about your business. It’s the foundation upon which your business is built. It’s often your underlying motivator and one of the best ways for people to connect with your brand.

Why share your “why”?

While we love a polished brand and professional veneer, it’s the vulnerable humanity behind small businesses that actually builds those connections with people who may go on to become customers.

When we share our “why” behind our businesses, we let people take a look “behind the curtain” and connect with our businesses on another level.

How to share your “why”

There are tons of opportunities to share your “why”! I love including your brand story with your why on your website about page (you can have a look at mine here) and throughout social media. It’s also a lovely thing to share in any press opportunities like podcast interviews or guest appearances as it’s a quick way to build rapport and share about your business.

In his amazing book Start with Why, Simon Sinek walks through how to identify your “why” and dig deeper to create a really compelling story around your “why”.

If you'd like to connect with your dream clients on a deeper level, finding the compelling “why” behind your business is the way to go. When I work with clients on their brand strategy, we dive into their “why” and forge a powerful mission statement that they can build their brand around based off of that central “why” behind their business.
