As a podcast host, there’s a lot that goes into creating a great episode. But honestly, sometimes it can feel like busy work when we haven’t optimized our processes.

Show notes are an often overlooked asset for your podcast because they not only offer a great way for your audience to engage with your content further, they can also help market your business with SEO! 1) Use Keywords

Like I mentioned, your show notes are important for SEO which is search engine optimization. Using the right keywords is essential for actually getting that organic traffic and get ranking in Google search. We want to use keywords naturally in the episode title, in your heading, and within the contents of your show notes. This is a great way to get organic traffic to your podcast episode show notes.

Here are a few of my favorite keyword research tools:

2) Use Headings To Cover The Most Important Points

We want our show notes to be easy to read and consume. The easiest way to do that is to utilize headings, break up long paragraphs, and cover the most important parts of the podcast episode.

Another benefit to using headings besides readability is also for SEO purposes! If you structure your show notes like a regular blog post and optimize for your target keywords you can increase your chances of your page showing up in organic searches.

3) Add a Transcript

Another option to make your podcast more accessible is to ensure that you include transcripts within your show notes for each podcast episode. You can either hire somebody for transcription or you can use a tool such as Otter, Rev, or Descript

Accessibility is important as an entrepreneur, but adding a transcript not only makes your podcast episodes more accessible, but it also helps people who don't like listening to podcasts but still want to enjoy your content.

4) Promote Your Freebies and Lead Magnets

It's important to remember that you started a podcast likely as a marketing tool, so it's essential to make it a priority to promote your freebies and lead magnets within your show notes. If you have a freebie that’s the same topic as a podcast episode or is the perfect fit for somebody listening to a specific podcast episode, it's a great idea to include an opt-in form right in your show notes.

5) Use a Call to Action

Finally, at the end of the show notes, you want to make sure that you include a call to action. This could be having people connect with you on Instagram, subscribe to the podcast, or download one of your free resources. You’ll always want to include a call to action to let your show note readers know what the next step they should take is!

Final Thoughts

Your podcast is so much more than just audio content, so why not harness it to improve your SEO, grow your email list and even direct people towards your offers with well optimized show notes!
