3 Best Options To Add Pop-Ups To Your Squarespace Website
Promoting your freebie / lead magnet / opt-in is critical to grow your email list, and one of the best ways to get eyeballs on your newsletter sign-up are promotional pop-ups.
Now, while pop-ups can be annoying and down-right frustrating when done wrong - when done right they are a helpful reminder for people to learn more from you!
So, when planning your website pop-up, make sure you’re following the 3 golden rules:
Make your pop up easy to close
Don’t show your pop up straight away - let people get oriented on your website before offering them your opt-in!
Make sure what you’re offering in your pop-up is clear, concise and helpful.
With those three elements in place, you’re well on your way to a winning pop-up that will help grow your email list with raving fans.
The next step is figuring out how to set up your amazing pop-up, so in this article I’ll be sharing the 3 best options to add pop-ups to your Squarespace website.
The easiest way to set up a pop up on your Squarespace* website is to use their native promotional pop ups.
You can find this by going to Marketing > Promotional Pop-Ups
Once in the pop-up editor, you can select from several pop-up styles, edit the image & text on your pop-up and connect your email system to sign people up for your newsletter.
If you’re using Squarespace Campaigns for your email marketing, this is as simple as selecting the Squarespace newsletter.
If you use MailChimp you’ll also find an easy integration in the Squarespace pop up editor to connect your account.
Squarespace also offers the option to connect a Google Drive to collect emails but this isn’t the easiest option and I recommend skipping it if you can!
So if you use any other email marketing software, (like I do with) ConvertKit* embedded forms ) then you’ll want to create your pop-up inside your email marketing system and embed that form onto your Squarespace site. You will need to make sure you’re on a premium Squarespace plan to use an embed code, so do keep that in mind if you are considering this option.
Email Marketing Software pop-up form
All good email marketing software comes with the option to create a pop-up with a form to sign up for your email list and allows you to embed that form into your website with a little big of code.
As I mentioned earlier, I use ConvertKit* embedded forms for my email marketing so I'll show you how to set up and connect your pop-up using that system but the process will be very similar for all softwares.
Firstly, you’ll want to create your pop-up in your email marketing software. This may also be called a modal form.
Once you’ve got your pop-up styled perfectly, you’ll want to find your embed code to add to your website.
In ConvertKit* embedded forms you'll find the embed form once you hit the "publish" button.
If you want your pop-up to show on all pages of your website, you’ll want to copy the Javascript code and pop that under Code Injection section in the first <header> box.
If you’re wanting your pop-up to show on just one page, I prefer using the HTLM embed form and simply adding that code to a code block at the top of the page you want to have your pop-up display.
You may see a notice saying your code block won’t display in edit mode, so make sure to hop over to your live website to check that your pop-up is is prope
The third, and my favorite, pop-up option is to use a third party software called ConvertBox* which allows for a LOT more flexibility with your pop-up design, lots of control over where you show your pop-ups and a bunch of other fun options I'll share more about in a sec.
ConvertBox* works a little differently from the other two pop-up options I've shared and is supremely easy to use!
To start with, you'll need to connect ConvertBox* to your website by following their simple set up process.
Once you’ve got your systems connected, get designing using their templates. You can even adjust your pop-up design for mobile which is music to this web designer’s ears!
Then you’ll need to specify where on your website you’ll want your new pop-up to display. You do this by entering the URL of the specific pages you want or simply selecting all pages under your homepage URL.
With the display all set, your last action is to launch your new pop-up! And here’s the great thing: you can schedule your pop-up to display at a later date and for specific times! So if you’re running a sale (like I did for my Sell Without Sales Calls course) you can schedule your promotional pop-up before your launch.
Another great feature of ConvertBox* are banners!
Banners are fantastic for promoting a new product or service, and the countdown timer feature work beautifully for promoting time-sensitive sales and offers.
(My friend Leanne Scott has an amazing course all about pop ups* that I highly recommend you check out!)
Final Thoughts
Promotional pop-ups are a fantastic way to grow your email list and share your offers. You do want to be thoughtful about when and how you present your pop-ups to not interfere with your website user’s experience of your website.
Choosing the right pop-up setup for your website will depend on how complex you want your pop-up game to be and which email marketing software you use.
