Should I DIY my website or hire a Web Designer?

Whether you’re a brand new business owner or a few years into your entrepreneurial journey, you’ve undoubtedly wondered whether you’re better off making your website yourself or hiring a professional web designer to do it for you.

And while, as a designer by training, I do think there’s a huge benefit to working with a pro, there are actually a few instances when DIYing your website might be the better choice!

Both can be great options depending on you and your business so in this article, I’ll be sharing honest advice to help you decide for yourself.

DIYing your website might be the right thing for you if:

  1. You're comfortable with tech and don't mind figuring it all out by yourself.

You like working with complex systems and the trial and error of doing things yourself. You’ll also want to have more time than money, i.e. you'd rather spend your energy making your website yourself than paying someone to do it for you.

  2. You’re in the early stages of business

You’re still doing the important work to still figuring out exactly what it is you want to do and who you want to serve. At this stage of business, things are so changeable that investing in a professional designer won’t likely give you a great return on your investment since your offer and marketing aren’t dialed in yet.

  3. You aren’t looking to scale your business or bring in tons of new clients.

If a few steady clients suits you just fine and you’re enjoying building those relationships via the DMs or other marketing channels, then investing in hiring a web designer to create your website won’t be a great use of your resources.

Hiring a professional web designer might be the right thing if:

  1. If you aren't techie and get overwhelmed figuring out how to make it all work

In that instance, hiring a pro will take all of this stress off of your plate so you can spend your time and energy where it counts.

  2. You’ve tried the DIY process and you found you’re spending hours fiddling with your website but it never looks right.

If web design and development aren’t in your zone of genius, hiring someone to do it for you can be a fantastic choice! They can translate what you have in your head into the stunning and profitable sales machine you’ve been dreaming of.

  3. You may also find you aren't getting the clients you want

Or you’re not getting enough of them, and you’re wasting time and energy hunting down clients who would be flocking to you if you had the right website in place to build trust and boost sales. This is the perfect situation to be in when hiring a web designer as we can take what you’ve been doing and put fuel on the fire by creating a compelling, conversion-focused home for your business that connects you with your target audience without all of the exhausting effort of social media.

  4. And most importantly, if you feel ready to invest in your business to help it grow faster you’re at the perfect stage to hire a professional web designer.

Your business is able to support investing your hard-earned money back into the business through a stellar website and get an expert’s touch on your website to accelerate your growth.
