Images are a powerful part of your Squarespace website, so learning to optimize them is key!
We're going to be talking about not just optimizing them for your Squarespace website, but also for search engines. So you’re in the right place if your search ranking is something you are concerned about.
Resize your images
So to start with, you’ll want to resize all of the images you're uploading to your website, to the following sizes:
Banner images or anything that's basically a full-width background, you want that to be no bigger than 2000 pixels wide.
Images in a gallery block or lightbox that will be a little bit smaller, you’ll want those to be 1,500 pixels wide.
And then all other images, which they call inline blocks in Squarespace, but essentially any other pictures that are default background, you'll want to make sure those are 750 pixels wide.
Compress your images
Then once you've resized those images, go ahead and compress them.
Aim for the final file size to be under 500 kilobytes per image.
This makes them really quick to load, and that is wonderful for SEO. Check out the tools mentioned section for links to two of my favorite image compression tools.
Rename your images
Once you've got your compressed image, you're going to want to rename it. Don’t just leave the default image name as this is a great opportunity to improve your SEO!
Use words that describe what that image is showing to help Google understand what the image is about, which their algorithm loves!
Add descriptive ALT text using your keywords
Finally, once you've added your image into Squarespace go ahead and add in an ALT description.
Your ALT description is what Google is going to read when it sees your website and sees that image, so you’ll want to not just describe your images but also naturally tie in any keywords you’re hoping to rank for when you can.
